PR! (Personal Record)

Today was a personal record day for me at crossfit, which I was pretty happy about after being so lame earlier this week. I got there a little late because on Fridays class is at 5 or 6, not 5:30. I left work a little early (we have a party on Sunday and I'm working for 3 hours, so I felt pretty OK about that) but still got there a few minutes late and missed a bunch of the warm up. They had us break up into partners, and so I went to look and see if anyone was partnerless, and this super cute 20 something boy was, so he was my partner :)  Clearly I should have done crossfit when I was younger. Anyhow, with our partners we alternated wall balls and stretching, and we did some rowing.

For strength we did back squats, and that's where the record came in. I got up to 125 pounds!  We did sets of 2. I started at 65 which was way easy. Then 85. Then 105. Then I started adding more slowly. I did a couple rounds at 120 and was thinking that was hard, but my form was still good and I could probably add more. So, I added another 5 pounds. And did 3 more rounds! 6 lifts at 125. Form wasn't perfect, but it was pretty strong for at least 4 of the 6. Go me!

WOD: 50-40-30-20-10-5
Row
Wallballs
my time: 15 min 14 sec

That was level 1, the regular version started at 60 and went down by 10 for each one. I realized when I was at 30 calories and everyone else was finished rowing that if I did that I was going to be way behind. So, I scaled. I did 25 wall balls in the warm up, so that's 90 wall balls for the day. Sufficient.

Little lame today

Today there was this multiple workout format going - seems to be a new thing this week. Not sure I like it, it was pretty action packed and went over the hour. Plus there were a lot of things to keep track of, not sure that I completely did. We started with a warm up that was 10 minutes, you were supposed to run 200 meters on the odd minutes and do 5 pull ups on the even. I was pretty excited that it started to really rain when I got there, an excuse not to run! But then she said to do burpees instead! That's just mean. I did burpees for the first round, but then after I did biking. I also can't do the pull ups, so I did ring rows.

Next we did squat cleans. We did a lot of them, for 18 minutes we were doing them every other minute, for a total of 16. I got up to 55 pounds, which isn't really that much for squat cleans, especially compared to everyone else. I just wasn't in a squat clean mood.

WOD: 12 minute EMOM
3 clean and jerk (I lifted 55 pounds)
6 pistols (I modified and either tucked my leg instead of extending or held onto a pole)
9 pull ups (I used bands)
I did 4 full rounds and a 5th round of clean and jerks

After I went to this mindfulness session at the climbing gym. It was pretty good. I always feel like I should try to incorporate mindfulness into my life better. The woman who lead the session was saying that your mind is going to do it's wacky stuff, and you should kind of be like "that's just my mind going a little goofy. I'm going to ignore it." Which is what I need to do for a 10 hour flight to Istanbul (on my way to Africa).  I should work on meditating some. But I'm still getting the plane meds.

Middlesex Fells Biking Fail

Today I decided that I would try some trail riding in the Fells to prepare for the off road riding in Africa. I was going to put my bike on my car and drive it over there, but I'm a little nervous about the bike rack, getting it to stay on my car and getting my bike to stay on the rack. I decided to see if I could just ride to the Fells. It's actually only 3 miles to get there by bike, so I thought, why not?  Well, Boston drivers.

It was so stressful, for a while I rode on the sidewalk! Then, I got there and realized that it's really more mountain biking than trail riding. My bike is fine for off road on a path, but not so much for the jagged boulders and such of a mountain bike trail (and me neither, lets be honest).  For a while I was pushing the bike on the trails which was #1 embarrassing and #2 not really the intention of the exercise. The one kind of interesting thing that did happen was that on the way out of the woods I almost ran over a snake. I'm going to have to find a different trail to try to ride.

Later I rode my bike to yoga and back. All in all, I think it was about 11 miles today, which isn't bad. There were a few hills involved. I wore the bike shorts (which we are apparently meant to call chamois) without underwear, but with tights under them. I felt a little sexy, but not really because they are like a giant maxi pad. It worked well, and my butt isn't sore at all!

Winded Barbara

Since I had only been to crossfit once this week, and today is Saturday, I had to go. I was thinking about going yesterday, but there were tabata burpees and I just couldn't face it on a Friday evening. Today's WOD had a few things I'm bad at, but at least I could do with modifications, and no burpees.

WOD: Winded Barbara, 3 rounds
200 meter run
15 pull ups (this is level 2. I used bands)
250 meters rowing
20 pushups (I used bands)
200 meter run
30 sit ups
250 meters rowing
40 air squats
my time: 37:15

It was pretty brutal. It was kind of cold and nasty out, which made the running even less pleasant.

Today was the March for Science on the Boston Common. It wasn't as big as the Women's March, but pretty impressive still. The signs were the best part, the sound system wasn't functioning that well, so I couldn't hear everything in the speeches. I walked to the Common, but my friend gave me a ride back to my car. I'm pooped!

Forgot to Blog!

I went to crossfit yesterday and then right after met the fam for pub quiz, getting home really late. Which led to me forgetting to blog. So, make-up blog. I kept thinking I should go to crossfit, but not doing it because I was tired, or didn't feel like it, or didn't want to fight marathon traffic. Finally I had to go, it was Thursday and I hadn't been in like a week!

We started with front squats in sets of three. I did 75 pounds for 5 sets. I feel like I could have done a little more, but not with good form. 75 pounds isn't bad, given that it was sets of 3.

WOD:
200 jumps with jumprope (or 100 double unders)
50 kettlebell swings (I used the smallest)
50 squats with kettle bell (it was supposed to be lunges, but I have toe issues)
50 kettlebell swings
200 jumps
my time: 13 min 26 sec

I did over 100 jumps with the jumprope unbroken the first time, and all the swings unbroken. The squats killed me, though, and on the way up I was much slower. I broke the swings into 3 sets and jumps into 4 sets.

It turns out that I got some serious saddle sores from the last bike ride. My butt still hurts! My brother's gf says that you aren't supposed to wear underware when biking. Sexy! But also not given that you are kind of sweating a lot and the bike shorts are gel that I don't think goes in the washing machine. Maybe a thong?  I'm not really a thong kind of gal, but ....

Tomorrow is the March for Science. Hopefully it will be fun!

Full 35 miles!

Today was a hot sunny day, I saw on the news that it got up in the 80's. I decided it was a good day for a second go at the bike path. My butt is still sore, but not as bad as it was. There was almost no crossfit due to Easter. Tomorrow's the marathon, so I have the day off - it's also Patriot's Day, so a bad day to be biking around Lexington and Concord!

I started at 1:30. By that time it was almost 80! I put sunscreen on my face, but for some reason that was it. By the time I was in Arlington I realized that was stupid. So, I stopped at Trader Joes and the Walgreens that's right by it for a power bar and some sunscreen. I put sunscreen on, but decided to hold out on eating until the end of the pavement. In total it took me about 66 minutes to get to the Depot at the end of the path (minus the time at Trader Joes, but that's allowed given that I don't want to be sun burned). I ate my power bar (which was so good by that point) and debated turning back vs going to Concord. The part from Depot Square to Concord is only 4 miles, it's dirt which is the most fun, and it's the least crowded. All plusses. But, my butt was hurting, it was hot, and I felt tired. I decided that if I went to Concord I could have ice cream, and that apparently was all I needed.

I got to Concord and rode a little past where I had gone the previous time so that I could be sure it's 35 miles (on map my run it's actually 35 and a quarter). While driving through Concord Center I realized that it was Easter, and started to worry that there would be no ice cream, but all was good. I wound up having raspberry chocolate chip frozen yogurt. Which was amazing. And then I headed back.

By that time it was after 1 and I decided that a power bar and frozen yogurt didn't really count as lunch while biking. Sadly there isn't really a go-to place that I've discovered on this route. Will have to work on that one. I went to starbucks because I was starving, and got a sandwich. I sat on the common in the shade and ate. Tomorrow it will be a madhouse there, but there will also be pancakes. So weird that hundreds of years after the start of the revolution we celebrate it with pancake breakfasts, but I digress. After Lexington it's pretty much all down hill on the way home, which I was pretty happy about. I'm definitely feeling more comfortable on the bike - I was going much faster on the downhills. In fact, I got from Lexington Center to Davis Square in a little over an hour. It would have been faster, but there were too many people.  I realized that I have very little food, so in Davis I bought some sushi, and rode the bike home with a paper bag of sushi on the handle bar. We used to carry things on our handlebars as kids, but never sushi. It was really good!

All and all a good ride!  I saw a few pairs of swans, a wild turkey near Concord, got faster on the turns and downhills. I probably peddled for 3/4 of the ride. My butt is killing me again, even though I wore the padded shorts, but hopefully recovery will be faster.

Happy Passover

This week has been a little crazy! Monday was Passover, plus my new class started. I was chauffeur for the Sadar, I picked up my nephew after work and drove him to my sister's, and then drove my mom home after. My mom wouldn't let me have any wine. Harsh. Wednesday was a friend's birthday, so of course I had to go for drinks, and yesterday my friend from Mexico and her daughter were here. Which is my excuse for no exercise in so long. I was going to go to crossfit on Tuesday, but it was full of burpee box jumps and running. So, today I had to go - it's Friday and I hadn't been yet this week!

Sadly, more burpees. We started with deadlifts in sets of 5. I lifted 100 pounds, which isn't that much, but I lifted it 25 pounds, which I was happy with!

WOD: 4 rounds
1 minute rowing
1 minute burpees
1 minute kettlebell swings
1 minute rest

I did 11 or 12 calories on the rower, like 5 burpees, and then about 25 kettle bell swings each round. My total score was 133. Not amazing, but whatever.

After I read the WOD I told myself I could go easy on the burpees as a way to get myself to go. I wasn't really into it, but I did OK on the rowing and swinging.

Now I'll have to see if I can motivate for tomorrow.

35 miles! (Almost)

Today I did my second long ride. I went from my place to the bike path and took the bike path until it ends in Concord! I felt pretty good about myself. I decided that for training purposes I would try to pedal all the time, except for when I had to slow down due to the crowds. I actually passed some people!  I was kind of tired by the end, and slowed down on the peddling. Fortunately the trip is uphill on the way there, so on the way back it's much more chill. Will have to work up to peddling for 3-4 hours straight.  I bought some new capri tights yesterday, and I didn't want to wear my padding with them because I thought it would make me look chunky. I'm pretty sure I'm going to regret that. My butt and girl parts are going to be killing me tomorrow!

It was a perfect spring day today!  It was almost 70 and sunny. Soon, there will be leaves on the trees again :)  I love spring.

I definitely have more training to do, but this is a good start.  After, I wanted to see how my garden did over the summer, so I went over, intending to spend 5 or 10 minutes. I cleaned up all the debris from the winter and turned the soil. Yay! dirty finger nails again!!

Still can't climb the rope, but I fart in its general direction

Well, not literally, but the damn thing was taunting me again, so I should have farted at it!  Rope climbing. Vile. However, the rest of the WOD was rowing and deadlifts, so I decided to put up with the climbing nonsense for the greater good. I'm really glad I did. Tomorrow's WOD is a nightmare with partners, mile long sandbag runs, 80 burpees, and other awfulness. I wouldn't have been able to bring myself to do it.

Today's WOD was a hero WOD, for a fireman who was killed in Boston in 2014. Sad.

WOD: 20 min 14 sec AMRAP
33 calories on the rower
15 deadlifts (I lifted 95 pounds)
4 rope climbs (I farted in the rope's general direction)
3 times through plus 5 calories of rowing

This weekend it's supposed to be spring-like outside!  Monday and Tuesday it's supposed to be really nice, like 77 on Tuesday!!  I'm going to try to get in a long bike ride on Sunday. That's longer than the last one. And maybe with more consistent peddling. It rained all week, so it's probably still wet in the fells. One day I have to get some riding going there.

Back to work

It was so hard to go back to work yesterday! I really wanted to stay on my couch and do nothing. But, bills gotta be paid, so what can you do? My calves were still killing me from the hike yesterday, and there were box jumps, so I decided today was a good day for crossfit. I was glad I did, I could do all but one of the parts of the WOD (ring dips, nope). And, my dean friend was there so I could try my Jedi Mind Tricks some more - no success yet.

We started with rowing 2000 meters for time. It took me 10 minutes and 7 seconds, which was the slowest time in the gym. Whatever, it was a good row.

WOD: 14 minutes AMRAP
12 power cleans (I lifted 45 pounds)
10 ring dips (I used a band, and was still lame)
12 calories on the rower
10 shoulders to overhead (again 45 pounds)
I did 3 rounds exactly

There's this giraffe in upstate New York that's very pregnant, her name is April and she's going to give  birth on giraffe cam. Maybe. I don't know, it seems like she just hangs out and eats hay. She's got a huge belly and was supposed to have baby giraffe a while ago. And of course I am addicted to giraffe cam now. But it's way better than watching the news.
